RISING NATURAL GAS PRICES AFFECT UTILITY CUSTOMERS

The gas pump isn’t the only thing that’s hitting some of Cap Rock’s customers hard in the pocketbook these days.  For power producers nationwide that use natural gas to fuel their power plants, soaring natural gas prices have resulted in an increase in the cost of electricity.

Natural gas is this country’s main heating fuel – and its price is not expected to go down any time soon.  A natural gas shortage, soaring oil prices and unprecedented demands for electricity have Americans bracing for another energy crunch.

As the increasing price of oil and gas continues to bolster some oil producing communities like Midland’s economy, the flip side of the coin is that citizens, businesses, schools and churches must pay more in utility bills.

Economists say we are not running out of energy, but prices are expected to continue to rise.  Though experts don’t expect a repeat of the energy crisis of the 1970s, they agree that nearly all Americans are going to feel it in the wallet.  To understand the dramatic increases in fossil fuel prices, which affect the wholesale price for electricity, see the illustration below.

The fact is, costs are going to be higher as long as the price of natural gas remains high, no matter where you live or what you use for energy.  We should be looking at age-old solutions such as weather-stripping your windows, adding insulation and turning the thermostat up or down, depending on the season, when you’re not at home.  It’s simple advice, but it’s gotten us through hard times before.
