THOSE HOT SUMMER DAYS ARE COMING

During the summertime, we all try to find ways to stay cool, calm and collected.  Worrying about how much the hot summer weather is going to cause energy bills to escalate is not conducive to staying cool, calm and collected.

There are ways that you can keep summer’s heat from zapping your budget.  Consider these simple ways to conserve energy and save money at the same time:

          *  Turning your water heater down to 100 -120 degrees will result in great savings and you’ll still be able to enjoy your hot shower.  By turning down the thermostat on your water heater, you do away with the need to add cold water to make the water comfortable, and it will cost a lot less to keep your water warm than it does to keep it hot.

          *  You can be comfortable if you turn your air conditioning unit down to 78 degrees.  Wear lighter clothes while you’re at home and you’ll soon become acclimated to the few degrees warmer and you will reap big savings on your energy bill.  Make the small investment needed for a thermostat timer.  Don’t let your air conditioner run all night when it’s not needed.  A timer will turn it on when it’s needed, and off when it’s not needed.

          *  Keep your fireplace damper closed.  Keep curtains and blinds closed during the day to keep out bright sunlight that brings heat.  Put solar screens on windows and glass doors and use energy-efficient light bulbs.  Install ceiling fans.

*  Caulk and weather strip windows and doors.  Where cold creeps inside in winter, the heat will come through in summer.

          *  Check the Freon in your air conditioner and change that air conditioner filter every month.  The less your air conditioner has to labor, the cheaper it is to run.

Remember, those hot days of summer are coming, but you can apply a few of these energy conservation tips and lower your energy usage and save money on your monthly electric bill!
